Despite their trust in the Spanish health system, an increasing number of people choose to alternate between public services and private care. According to the latest data analysed in 2020, in our country 10.5 million people pay for private complementary insurance (8.7 million citizens) or are part of a mutual insurance company (1.8 million users). This represents an increase of 3% in 2020 compared to 2019.
It is estimated that each Spaniard spends around €437 on private health care each year. This money goes towards consultations with specialists or the purchase of medicines not financed by the public health service.
Spain has a large percentage of users of private healthcare. More specifically, 57% of hospitals are private along with 53% of MRI equipment.
